The Heroes of D-Day Recognized by Age Concern Hampshire

Age Concern Hampshire, a charity founded in 1985, recently paid tribute to the heroes of D-Day through a series of commemorative events. These events were held at the organization’s Care and Wellbeing Centres, Hospital to Home Wards, and wellbeing services on Tuesday 2 July, 2024. The celebrations aimed to provide an opportunity for reflection, gratitude, and community support, as attendees honored the bravery and sacrifice of those who served 80 years ago.

One of the events, held at Petersfield Community Hospital and supported by Age Concern Hampshire’s Hospital to Home Services, featured 108-year-old war veteran Eric “Pony” Moore. Affectionately known as “Pony,” Eric shared personal stories from his time as a Second World War veteran. He served in the army and spent time in Palestine at an RAF dental hospital, holding the rank of Lance Corporal during his eight-year stationing in Egypt.

The Petersfield Royal British Legion also participated in the celebration, enjoying tea and cake with staff, volunteers, and patients. The event also welcomed Jo Gray from Shine Radio, who conducted interviews with patients to ensure their stories were heard and honored during the commemoration.

“We were honored to commemorate the heroes of D-Day across a series of events,” said Helen Callen, CEO of Age Concern Hampshire. “These events not only allowed us to pay tribute to the incredible bravery and sacrifice of our veterans but also provided an opportunity for our community to come together in solidarity and gratitude.”

The celebrations continued at the charity’s Care and Wellbeing Centres, where clients and staff joined together in activities and moments of reflection to pay tribute to the heroes of D-Day. The participants honored the courage and selflessness of those who fought for freedom eighty years ago.

Age Concern Hampshire provides services to the older community of Hampshire and currently delivers support at their Care & Wellbeing Centres throughout the county.
